Hi. My Name is Sammy and I...{have a love/hate relationship with my contact lenses!} #TTT

Welcome to my 4th installment of #thoughtsthingsthursday!  I really look forward to these Friday Thursday posts. (I just couldn't get this post up yesterday - sorry!)  I actually think I may start What I Ate Wednesday or Marvelous in My Monday posts - I think they give a nice structure to the blog...I do like knowing what to expect!  As of now I'm still just thinking about it though!

So, back to my contacts....let me give you the back story first.

I started wearing glasses in 3rd grade.  I was 8 years old people!!!  I can remember it so clearly - I went to the eye doctor HOPING he would say that I need glasses. (I can remember the same feeling at the orthodontist when he told me I needed braces!  What was I thinking...who wants glasses and braces?? Apparently me!)

Of course I wanted glasses, I thought they were cool, something different, a novelty.  Well, they were a novelty alright....and after a few days that novelty wore off and I found them to be annoying!  I didn't want to have to wear them in school and while watching tv or a movie.  They were a nuisance!  And I DID NOT think they were cool anymore - I thought they were dorky, cue Anne in the Princess Diaries...

Oh Anne!

Then sometime in middle school I went to get fitted for contact lenses and I knew that these would change my world!  I still kept my glasses with me at all times, just in case, but I could wear sunglasses, I could play sports without having to fidget/worry about my glasses and I looked like my old self again!

And I've been wearing them ever since!  That's 16+ years!  And they are getting old, too!

It's a Catch 22!  You see with my contacts: my eyes are always dry, if I wear them for the entire day my eyes are too tired to wear them if we are going out that night and one wrong rub of the eye and that thing is lost in space!  But with my glasses: I can't see as well driving (especially at night!), I can't wear sunglasses and I look like a 12 year old!   It's like 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other....I don't want to wear my glasses OR my contacts! lol  {I'm like a 6 year old, arms crossed, pouting in the corner!}

Glasses + no makeup makes me look like either a 12 year old or an old lady! ;)

I would love to get laser surgery to fix my vision - it's costly and at this moment in time it's not in the cards - hopefully one day though!  It would be so interesting and amazing to actually see without needing corrective lenses - something I can barely remember!

Btw, on most days I wear these...

I kid!!  Although how cool are these for the holiday - my FAV holiday - next week??

Do you wear glasses or contacts?
Do you like them or do they annoy you too? ;)

I'll be back later with more!

  1. hahaha i love that photo from princess diaries :) and ok so, i dont wear glasses or contacts, but i have the worst long distance vision, i really should get them. i know i should go get my eyes checked, like you would think "being able to see" would be pretty high up on my to do list, but considering i spend most days on my computer im like "eh, whats so great going on in the distance i need to see anyways?" :)

    1. Hi Charlotte! Good to hear from you lady - how's the job search going??
And yes - you should go to the eye dr!! ;) My husband just recently got contacts, but he's had glasses to see distance for years....he doesn't like the way he looks in his glasses so he never wore them...when we went somewhere he'd be like "tell me if you see someone we know from far away bc I can't see" lol OY!

  2. Oh my goodness! I have the same love/hate relationship with mine! Started wearing glasses in the 7th grade. I hate having dry eyes when I wear contacts. I bought the daily ones recently, and those are less annoying. I don't have to clean them! Those things last a while because I wear my glasses at home and hardly go anywhere important. I wanted corrective eye surgery, PRK is what the military offered me. That's where they go in and scrape - YIKES! I don't know what is worse, the scraping/lasering or wearing glasses while working out. I'm a bit of a wimp with my eyes. I'd rather suffer than have something probing or sucking or scraping at them.

    1. I wear dailies too, Dee! And I like that I can just toss them....but they are still make my eyes so dry! Which stinks! Maybe PRK is better than nothing - your eye is numb during the procedure (and I think they give you a valium!) so as long as you don't feel it...too bad you have to keep your eyes open during it! LOL

  3. I man, I totally get this!!! Sometimes my contacts drive me crazy, but sometimes I really don't feel like wearing my glasses. I've considered laser surgery, but it kind of freaks me out. I keep thinking something will go wrong, but I guess it's a routine surgery, so it'd probably be fine, but I just can't get myself to do it. I think what I hate the most is when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't see a thing. So annoying!

    1. Yes, Holly, I totally know how you feel - it is a routine surgery...but it's your EYES we're talking about!!! And YES - getting up to use the bathroom or to look at the clock in the middle of the night would be SO amazingly different!!! :)

  4. I'm supposed to wear contacts or glasses... tisk..tisk! I know I really need to, but I just cant see far away. I do wear my glasses every nce in awhile, mostly on the weekends. I stopped wearing contacts because I can never find a pair that doesn't dry my eyes out so quickly! I have promised my husband I would get back to the eye doctor soon and start wearing contacts again/ or glasses more often. He is worried about me driving, but I swear I can see! : )

Just can't read the signs until im almost under them, haha. Ok maybe not funny!

  5. I want Lasik too, but I thing=k you have to wear glasses for 2 weeks beforehand---NO WAY! I wouldn't be able to CF with my glasses and I'd be blind without them!!
I did have a student who would wear all white contacts or red contacts--need attention much---anyway they were freaky

  6. Wow! I really hope I am never on the road at the same time as Charlotte or Heather after hearing both their comments about how well they can see or should I say how bad their able to see driving without glasses. Charlotte it has been well over a year since you posted your comment and I really hope you did finally go and get glasses to wear at least while your driving. And Heather you have glasses but clearly feel like you only need to see good on a few choice weekends? I am sure you both would likely fail the DMV drivers test now without glasses. I am a retired optician by the way.
