WOD - November 20 - 28, 2013 (A massive recap!)

I have been SO busy with my #ATipADayBeforeThanksgiving series - and then Thanksgiving! - that my WOD posts have been accumulating...and accumulating fast!!  So I figured I'd bore update you in one big post!

Wed - November 20
Orange Theory was amazing tonight! We covered 2.75 miles (at some points I was running at an 8% incline!!), rowed a little and busted out some great strength training....Oh, and at the end of the 30ish minute treadmill portion we did 1 minute of high knees!  As you know I DO NOT like high knees! Ugh!!

We ended class about 5 minutes early so I knew something was up!  We all went to the weight room and we all got in a plank.  The first person to fall was a woman (it was a little over a minute), so the women had to do 5 burpees - while the men 'rested'.  We then all planked again, and another woman fell first (ugh!!), so the women then did 10 burpees - while the men 'rested' again!  Annoying!!

But I love me some burpees so I didn't really mind ;)

Thur - November 21
I must have been in a planking mood after last night because I did Melissa's 20 minute Plank & Burn workout.  It was great!  I didn't think that I had a jump rope (ps - I realized I did over the weekend!), so I just pretended!  I really liked this workout - very different!

Fri - November 22
2 miles on the treadmill in 19:35.  Quick and painless, it felt good!

Sat - November 23
Melissa's awesome Jump and Tone Boot Camp workout - 12 minutes!  Another great, quick workout.  The fact that she's utilizing jumping rope is exciting and new!!  Again, I just pretended to jump rope.....and then after this workout my husband reminded me that we have one in the garage!!

I was so excited that I wanted to actually jump I did 5 sets of 1-minute single unders!  My calf muscles (and heart! lol) were feeling it!

Sun - November 24
2.5 miles on the treadmill in 23:05!  Another feel-good run!

Mon - November 25

Zuzka's 5 minute competition workout - I completed 10 full rounds + 5 side crunches on each side.  Check it out and let me know how you do!! I can't wait to try it again in a week or 2 and see if I can improve and do more rounds!

Tue - November 26

Bender's newest jump rope video - Better Buns: Jump and Burn workout.  LOVED it!!!  Awesome lower body routine!  Another winner (duh!).  Then, just because I had a few minutes to spare, I did 5-minutes of single unders...and I completed 557!  Jumping rope is a great cardio and you totally feel it in your arms and legs!! I really like that I added it into my repertoire!

Wed - November 27

A quick pre-race 1.5 mile run just to get my legs moving!!

Thurs - November 28

The TURKEY TROT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!  I will do a full re-cap (at some point!) but basically, I felt great, I PR'd and I was so proud of myself!! Holy NSV :)

What's been your favorite WOD lately?

I will be running ran a very successful 5k Turkey Trot (in 28:30!!! a MAJOR PR!), spending quality time with family, watching listening to football on the TV as I pass by, cooking, playing with my kids, eating, drinking and being merry!!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, my friends!

8 Days of Healthy Tips Before Thanksgiving...TIP #8

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving Eve!!  I think I saved the best TIP for last....this is really the perfect one to finish off my #ATipADayBeforeThanksgiving series!

It's actually more of an order than a tip - so I really really hope that even if you just follow one of these tips, it's this one!! :)

Remember that when all is said and done, this is a time to relax and enjoy yourself.  If you indulge (or over-indulge!)'s OK!  If you don't have a chance to get in a formal's OK!  If you accidentally burn a side's OK!

Be IN THE MOMENT with your family and friends!  Cut yourself some slack (if you haven't realized it deserve it!!)

So, my last TIP order is to simply Relax and Enjoy yourself!!  BE THANKFUL!  Be REALLY thankful!  Think about what it really means to have all of the things that you have!  With the good comes the bad, I get that.  But it's all a part of this wonderful journey called life, isn't it?  :)
Thank you guys for being so receptive to these posts and for being as excited as I was about this series!  I really enjoyed bringing it to you and I hope, if nothing else, it brought a smile to your faces each day!

I'll be back tomorrow for Turkey Day! {gobble! gobble!}

8 Days of Healthy Tips Before Thanksgiving...TIP #7

We are only a couple of days from Thanksgiving - which means we only have a couple of tips left!!  On to TIP #7... dinner, that is!!

This is a reminder to SIT DOWN WITH YOUR FAMILY!  I know we all get caught up cooking, and cleaning up, and making sure that everyone else is fed/served/happy/satisfied....but don't forget about YOURSELF!

Especially when you are hosting at your feel like you're all over the place, right?  It's fun, yet exhausting!

Also, don't spend all day nibbling in the kitchen (but, by all means, nibble a little!).  You'll kill your appetite!  You have to leave yourself enough room to eat the actual meal come dinnertime!

The dishes will wait, the mess in the kitchen will wait, the dirty plates and empty glasses scattered throughout the house will wait!  So SIT DOWN TO DINNER...AND ENJOY YOURSELF! :)

Is Thanksgiving at your house this year??
When you are hosting, is it hard for you to relax and sit down to the meal?

8 Days of Healthy Tips Before Thanksgiving...TIP #6

I really feel like this tip doesn't require much explanation, but of course it deserves it's own post because it's super important!  TIP #6 is...

Start a new tradition with your family and/or friends!!

Holiday memories are centered around special traditions!  Traditions that are unique to your family, that you look forward to every year - whether it's the food you cook and eat, where you gather, what you wear, who you're with....literally any little detail can be considered a tradition if it's special to you and your family!
  • Wear your flannel pajamas to dinner?  New tradition!
  • Buy an ornament that describes a milestone from the year? New tradition!
  • Make a new recipe (from Pinterest!)? New tradition!
  • Go around the dinner table and name one reason you are thankful for each person sitting there? New tradition!
What is a new tradition that you would want to implement this year??
Happy Thanksgiving Week, all :)

8 Days of Healthy Tips Before Thanksgiving...TIP #5

This tip is sure to boost your mind, body and spirit!  Tip #5 is...

We often take for granted 'simple' things that we have - whether it be a loving family or a roof over our head or a hot meal.  Not because we are ungrateful, but because it's hard to imagine that there are many people that live without these things every day.....

Charity is a beautiful thing.  It should come from the heart and you should never feel pressure or uncomfortable about should give what you can, where you can, how you can.

Some ways to GIVE this holiday season (and all year 'round!):

  • Time - Volunteer at a soup kitchen or help to pack boxes to send over to our military or to send to the victims of the recent natural disasters.
  • Money - Don't have the time but have the ability to give money, do so!  The charities will use it where they need it most.  Even $5 is helpful and appreciated.  It's not the amount, it's the fact that you're donating...because every little bit helps!
  • Goods - Donate old clothes, toys or furniture.  Clean out your closets and play rooms - some charities will even come to your house to pick up your donations.
Find a charity that you believe in, that you want to help - since it's YOUR time and money that you are giving away!  You want to make sure that where you think your goods/services are helping and what they are actually going towards are the same thing!

How are you planning to give back?
Doesn't it feel good??

8 Day of Healthy Tips before Thanksgiving...TIP #4

Hi guys!!  It's Saturday - WOO HOO - hope you're all having a great day!!  Since Thanksgiving is only a handful of days away, I'm sure some (most!) of you are taking advantage of this weekend time and starting on TIP #4....

This is a feast of a holiday - the mere mention of the word 'Thanksgiving' and my brain goes straight to thinking about turkey and cornbread and stuffing and cranberry sauce....and so on!

I think, for a lot of families, it's not only food that's made in the kitchen....memories are made there, too!  Cooking together, sharing recipes and the stories behind them, getting messy and pouring your love into the dishes that you're really makes them taste even better, I'm sure of it!

Now I'm not telling you to dive in and cook a 20 lb turkey!!  If you're up for the challenge though, go for it!

I'm just suggesting you make appetizer, a side, a dessert.  What's your go-to dish?  What are you great at making?  MAKE THAT!!

If you have the time, try something new a few days before Thursday and see how it goes!  If not, just make what you know.  There is so much else going these days it'll be way less stressful to make something already in your repertoire!!

Cooking is also very exciting because you're in control....of the ingredients!  You can make substitutions, swapping out high fat/calorie foods for great alternatives, or not!  You decide!

I think it's healthy for mind and body - so get in the kitchen with your loved ones and help prepare this awesome meal for your family and friends!

What are you making for Thanksgiving??
I'm planning to make a green bean casserole and something yummy for dessert!

8 Days of Healthy Tips before Thanksgiving...TIP #3

By now we're all familiar with this game I'm playing, so I'll get right into TIP #3....

This is a healthy tip for your mental well-being rather than your physical well-being, but in my opinion it's just as important as TIPS #1 and #2!

Have a conversation!  Sounds simple, I know....but please let this be your reminder to DO IT!

Sit down with your grandparents....your children....your friends...and have a meaningful chat!  Put away the video games, shut off the TV and grab a coffee or hot chocolate and just TALK!  This is time together that you won't get back.

Tell stories with each other, share things and connect - or reconnect! - with the people that mean the most to you!  Take the time to let these people know that they are important in your life.  It sounds small but it really feels good, and means a lot!

I have close girlfriends that I don't see or speak to all the time because we're...well...busy.  After college we all went off to do our own thing - I got married and started a family, some friends moved to the Big Apple and started the "Sex and the City", single-gal life, others went off to graduate school.

We may not see or speak to each other every day or even every week, but when we do we pick up right where we left off.  We can see updates from Facebook and pictures, but it's nice to connect sometimes...not through text or email, but through real conversation.

Take advantage of (free!) video chat to connect with loved ones that can't be with you physically!

Sometimes you need a reminder to make that extra call, or close your computer, to make the most of the moment that you're in, with the people you love!

Stay tuned for TIP #4 tomorrow :)

Do you have family or friends that you may not see or speak to all the time but when you do it's like no time has passed?

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Hi. My name is Sammy and I...{am so happy that it's the holiday season!} #TTT

This is going to be a quick one because my "real" post for today is TIP#2 for the Tip A Day Before Thanksgiving series (if you missed it, check out TIP#1 from yesterday)!  But I didn't want to skip a #thoughtsthingsthursday!

Even though I live in sunny Florida, and the temperatures barely dip below 60*F on even the coolest night, I love this 'season'!  It makes me feel so good!

Much like how I love Halloween, I love everything about this time of year and all of the cliches about it!  My list would include: Christmas lights, good food, family time, fall, cool weather, jeans+boots, my Uggs, parties, Hanukkah, Santa Claus, gifts, New Year's, hot chocolate, vacation time, no school/work, time with friends, holiday cheer, great movies on TV...I really could go on and on!

What's not to love?

Do you like the holidays??
Have you done your holiday shopping yet?

8 Days of Healthy Tips before Thanksgiving...TIP #2

I hope this series is getting you excited for Thanksgiving - I've enjoyed planning it and coming up with tips that I think you guys will really be able to use and implement!  It's not that I'm giving you mind-blowing suggestions that you never would have thought's just that sometimes (especially for me!) it helps to see things in black and white, laid out in front of me, in a simple list!

For today, here is Tip #2:

I know what you're thinking...drink?  How is that a healthy tip??

I'm not talking alcohol people!!  (but I will get to that in a minute!)  I'm talking the good for you, refreshing, raw, pure, delicious...

Water is important for so many reasons, especially around the holidays when there tends to be more eating and less moving!  Water fills you up, it keeps things moving (ahem!), it keeps you hydrated (duh! lol) and honestly, more times than not, when you think you're hungry, you may just be thirsty!  Try it and let me know!

If you can't stand the taste of water - which I can't understand because has no taste! lol - try something to spice it up, like Crystal Light!  But there really is no substitute for the real deal!

As a former Weight Watcher (or lifelong WW, I guess!), I am a water freak!  I drink water all the time, all day long, every day!  I always have my water with me!  And so should you!

If you're interested, I just found this great article - click here for Real Simple's Best Reusable Water Bottles.

Don't get me wrong....I am planning to drink alcohol too!  Any reason to celebrate!  Just remember to drink responsibly, have a plan and don't drink and drive!  Enjoy yourself within reason :)

Do you like water?
Do you drink 'enough' of it?

8 Days of Healthy Tips before Thanksgiving...TIP #1

Thanksgiving is only a week away!!  WOW - that came fast, huh?

The days leading up to Thanksgiving will be filled with family, friends, fun and food - and rightfully so!  It is a time to indulge and enjoy yourself, to stop THINKING so much, to give thanks for everything that you have, everything that you should be grateful for!

Which is why I decided to do A Tip a Day until the Big Day...  Each day I will reveal a new tip - and include some easy and feasible ways to incorporate this 'tip' into your Thanksgiving celebration.  These tips will not help you lose weight (necessarily!).  They aren't really meant for that....they are simply meant as a reminder to stay mentally and physically 'healthy' during this festive and food-y holiday!

So let's get this party started with....

TIP #1 - MOVE!

If you have the time and energy, continue on with your usual workout routine! Why not, right?  Go to the gym, head out for a run, take a spin class!  If you're pressed for time, check out my favorite online trainers that have 100s of full-length real-time workouts to choose from...Melissa Bender and Coach Kozak!

Sign up for your local "turkey trot" which is a fun and light-hearted 5k run/walk.  Or if there isn't one near you, sign up for a virtual one! (like Roni is hosting, check it out here!)

Walk at the park, walk to the park, walk after dinner with your family, walk while the kids ride their bikes, walk to check out the homes in your neighborhood that have put up their Christmas lights  (I'm excited to say that we have a few already!!), just take a feels good!

Dance with your kids, with your honey, by yourself!, in your living room, like no one's watching!

Do #wycwyc - can't ask for more than that! :)

Is anyone planning to run a Turkey Trot this Thanksgiving?? I am!

Stay tuned for the next week while I slowly reveal the rest of my healthy tips!!

November 19

I knew that I wanted Tuesday to be a kick-butt strength day - it had been too long since I sweated it out with Melissa ;)

I did the 15 minute HIIT Quick Full Body Workout.  It was a good one - cardio, deadlifts, abs, plank exercises, push-ups, lunges, squats...there was a little bit of everything!  I was sweaty by the end and I was happy it was done and done! What is it about high knees that I hate so much?? (maybe because they're exhausting?! lol)  Am I alone here?
On to my Vital-awesome-licious news ;)

This is proof that you don't have to wait until Cyber-Monday to get great deals!!

Oh one more thing....Holiday Oreos are baaaaaaaaack!  I absolutely live for the fudge covered Oreos!  So yum!

What was that post about not deviating from my shopping list?? ;)

Tips from a Stay-at-Home Mom to SAVE MONEY! :)

Happy Monday!!!!

I thought I would do a post with some tips today!  Not that I'm an expert but, as I've done before (like here and here and here! lol), I like to share things that have worked (or that I'm trying to implement!) with my own family.

During the week my little guy and I spend all day together since he isn't in school yet (my older son is in preschool for part of the day).  That being said, going to run errands every day and picking up 'a few things here' and 'a few things there' adds up SUPER quickly!

Literally whenever I leave Target or Walmart my jaw drops {As in...I came for paper did I end up spending $75??!!}

I sat down to organize my thoughts.... What else can I do to occupy my time - and my kids(s) - instead of spending unnecessary $$ during the week!  I figured it would be helpful to share it with my friends too!  These days, who isn't trying to save money, right?
  1. STOP mindlessly running errands
    • This is a hard one for me.  But my girlfriend made a good point - make a list over the weekend of exactly what you need.  And when you go to the store, ONLY buy those things!  That's where I end up overspending - I run in to grab something I forgot to get the day before {we just talked about this!} and I buy 10 other things that I didn't even know I needed (or don't really need, actually! lol)
  2. Walk and/or go to the park
    • This is an obvious one, I know, but it's one of my new favorite activities!  In my city alone there are 4 or 5 GREAT parks, most of which have walking paths.  If the weather permits, head out there....get in some exercise for you and then some fun for the kids!  Tire everyone out in one fell swoop!
  3. Free library / 'mommy & me' classes
    • We go to a free mommy & me at the library once a week!  It's only 40 minutes....but it's free, I get to hang with some of my girlfriends and the kids get to play!  And it's free!  Go online and search in your're bound to find something!
    • For some (most really) mommy & me classes you do have to pay - but they will usually let you try out a class first to determine whether it is something you'd want to continue.  Take advantage of those trial classes and find what works for you!
  4. Play dates with other parents that are home with their kids
    • Go to each other's homes or meet at the's the cheapest day you'll ever have!
  5. Indoor playgrounds that offer bundles
    • During the summer when it's SO hot, humid and raining - or during the winter for some of you when it's freezing and blizzarding outside! - I love these indoor playgrounds.  But these places can get expensive.  You pay, say $6-10 per child to play there.  And usually we're only there for an hour or so.  But check coupon sites, like your local Groupon or LivingSocial, some of them pop up on there and you can buy a bundle and save some $$.
I hope that these tips help at least a little bit!  It's easy to go through the drive-thru 3x a week for one of these:

...but it adds up (calorie- and money-wise!) very quickly!

Side note: I tried the Starbucks Caramel Brulee Frappuccino Light the other day and it was YUM!! :)

So, what are some of your Tips & Tricks to save $$ during the week?
I'll be back later with my WOD!

WOD - November 16 & 17, 2013 and my new boots!

Another weekend is coming to a close, and we had a wonderful, family-filled good time!  And my workouts were totally part of that wonderful-ness! :)

November 16

I went to the gym Saturday morning to run.  And surprise, surprise....someone ran 3 miles!!  Can I get a "woot-woot" for breaking my 2 mile barrier?? :)

I actually finished the 3 miles in 29:45!!  It felt great!
I was full of energy after that!  Sweaty, but happy! I wasn't planning on doing anything else but I took my own advice:

I did 75 kettlebell swings (3 sets of 25) with a 22lb kb!  Those things are exhausting!

Then I was done :)

November 17

Sunday's workout was a fun one - We met friends & walked around our city's farmers market, then we left there and walked right into Dunkin' Donuts to have a snack and finally, I walked the mall with my mom to do some shopping - not a lot of calories burned but a darn good time was had! :)

In not so many words, Sunday was a rest day!

I did score some gorgeous black Frye boots (and a new pair of skinny jeans)!!  This is my first non-workout-related clothing purchase that I've made in a long time!

What do you think?
Dear Weather, Please cool down so I can wear my new boots this season!! :)
Have you gotten any new clothes lately that you're excited about??
How were your weekend WODs?

WWI & Things that I ALWAYS manage to forget!

Happy Saturday everyone!  It's a little rainy and dreary here today.  Pretend we're sitting down together with a mug of hot cocoa to chat!  That would make this day perfect-o! :)

Accountability.  Up 0.5 lbs.  That's all!

I REALLY like these tips!!  They seem obvious but I like seeing it all together like this!
Where's my brain?? (Sometimes I wonder if it's still in there! ;))

So, this post came to me in the shower while I was doing #4 on the list!  I consider myself an intelligent, rational person.....but there are actually things that, at initial thought, I just can't remember!  Embarrassingly enough, I'm sharing them with you today!  {We are old friends, aren't we?}
  1. My age!
    • I know this one seems crazy - and now that I'm 30 this is happening less because I really can't seem to forget it - but in my mid-20's it always took me a minute..."Am I 26 or 27?"  At first thought I honestly couldn't remember! lol
  2. My address / phone number
    • I rationalize this one because you never call yourself, right?  I don't really know anyone's phone number by heart - besides my immediate family that I talk to 100x/day and have had the same numbers forever.  New age = new technology.   Note to self: DON'T LOSE YOUR CELL PHONE!
  3. What I go to the grocery store for in the first place!
    • This is the MAIN reason that I make a grocery list.  I get so side-tracked when I walk in that I sometimes forget what I am actually there for!  We go through milk very fast since both of my boys love it so I'm always running in for milk - and I leave with a cart-full of other things I didn't know I needed - and no milk! ;)
  4. To shave my legs
    • It's not that I FORGET to shave them, per say.  It's that my shower is usually as fast as possible so I rush through it...and don't have the time or patience to shave my legs.  It's just not at the top of my to-do list.....I'm not alone here, right??
  5. The day / date
    • I chalk this one up to the fact that I'm not a student and I don't work in an office, but most of the time I have no idea what the date is!  The day is a little easier to remember....Mommy & Me is on one day, the other Mommy & Me is on another...but I always have to check my calendar for the date.
I guess we can never forget when it's Wednesday now! ;)
Anywho, please join in on my party and let me know....what is something that you ALWAYS manage to forget??
Hope you're all having a great weekend!

WOD - November 13, 14 & 15, 2013

Happy Friday everyone!!  The weekend is upon us - have any good plans??

This is a combined WOD post - here we go...

Wednesday, November 13

Orange Theory!  I signed up for an early evening class, and to be honest I was tired before I even's such a full day it's hard to muster up the energy for such an intense workout when it's dark out!  But I did, and come 7:30, I was happy it was over and done with!

They are calling this week Peak Performance Challenge week.  Every day is a new challenge (ie - how fast can you run a mile?) that the class performs before the actual workout begins.  Today's challenge was a 500 meter row as fast as possible.  (You know how much I love the rowing machine - it's such a great workout!)

After a 5 minute warm-up jog on the treadmill I did my 500 meters - in 1:46.  I think I was one of the first women in my class to finish!  The fastest woman all day did it in 1:43....I saw the stats on their Facebook page and for I CAME IN 2nd PLACE OVERALL (for women)!!!!!!!!!! woo hoo! :)

Class was fast paced and exhausting.  We did a ton of rowing - probably 2000 meters!  A decent amount of running - probably over 2.5 miles. And a very varied workout in the weight room - including the bosu, free weights and the SBT straps.

There are certain trainers that I like better than others, there are some exercises that I prefer to do over others, but one thing's always is an amazing workout every.single.time!!!

This is a perfect picture of a typical class!  There is SO much energy in the room :)

Thursday, November 14

In the morning I usually have a plan for my WOD.  Even if I'm not going to do it until much later in the day - I have an idea of which video I'll do, or what I'll do at the gym.  Today it was all up in the air.....until I read Heather's post about Tabata!  Thanks Heather!!

I love Tabata workouts!!  They're quick and powerful!  And most of the time I do body weight exercises so the only thing I need is my Gymboss timer! Love!

It was a great workout - and the planks finished it off nicely!  You know for my at-home workouts I have no patience for anything longer than 20 minutes so this was perfect! :)

PS - Can I just say that I love PicMonkey!  ((I know there are an array of fonts and colors on this one but I was playing around!))  You will be seeing A LOT of fun graphics from now on!!

Hi. My name is Sammy and I...{STILL don't like to disappoint my parents!} #TTT

#thoughtsthingsthursday already?  This week is flying!

So, as I've discussed over and over, I'm 30!  ((I know, I get it!))  And even at my age - with a husband...and a house...and 2 kids - I STILL seek my parents approval.

Sidebar: Sometimes I can't believe that all of these things are my responsibility! lol  What the heck do I know? ;)
Got it! :)
My parents love me and support me regardless, I know that!  But I like knowing that THEY think that I am making the right/appropriate decisions for me and my family!

Let's rewind for a minute though.  I was always a "good kid"!

As I remember it....I always tried to do the right thing; I got the good grades; I made my parents proud.  I LIKED making my parents proud; I never tried or wanted to make them angry or disappoint them.  I truly seeked their approval.

Before every decision, big or small, I talk to my parents.  Yes, even now!  It's just the way our family operates....and I love it!  I love their input and opinions, and most - if not all - of the time we're on the same page about everything.

Which brings me to my latest predicament.....I let the cat out of the bag last night about my blog - AHHHH!!  Up until last night this blog was my dirty, little secret!  (I am SO scandalous, right? lol)  Now my parents are in the know! :)

I wanted needed a few months to really get my feet wet.  I wanted to write for me...and I knew that once they knew about it they'd be reading it, of course!  And that was a little intimidating to me!  I also knew they'd be so proud and supportive (which they totally were!!), and they'd want to share this with the world!!  And like I always say, I'm not ready for everyone in my real life to know.

My mom is so excited she's already planning OUR trip to BlogHer '14 and FitBloggin' 14!! ;)  She's excited and proud and probably spent all night reading every post I've written thus far!

Yes, my parents think it's great and wonderful and all those things - but they were disappointed that I didn't tell them from the start.  As expected!

And I feel a weight lifted!  It was hard keeping this baby a secret!

{{HI MOM & DAD!!}}
