Recent Half Marathon Training Runs & The Fitness Games App Review

DISCLAIMER: I was given the opportunity - as a Fit Approach Sweat Pink Ambassador - to review the Platinum version of The Fitness Games app free of charge.  As always, my thoughts & opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Hi friends!!  I sound like a broken record...I know....but how is it Monday again?  These weeks are just flying by!!  It's almost the end of September, and you better believe I'm gearing up for Halloween! (My fav holiday, duh!)



So I'm going to try and update you on my half marathon training runs/workouts every 2 weeks or so (see my first Recent Runs update).  It keeps me accountable and I can assess how much I'm running and where I am in terms of preparedness! 


Monday 9/8 - 5 mile treadmill run
Tuesday 9/9 - rest
Wednesday 9/10 - 3.1 mile treadmill run
Thursday 9/11 - rest **my birthday**
Friday 9/12 - 7 mile treadmill run
Saturday 9/13 - FlyBarre class
Sunday 9/14 - rest

Monday 9/15 - 3 mile run
Tuesday 9/16 - rest
Wednesday 9/17 - FlyBarre class
Thursday 9/18 - rest
Friday 9/19 - 8 mile treadmill run
Saturday 9/20 - rest
Sunday 9/21 - 4 mile run

My total mileage for each week was 15 miles - not too shabby!  I had some great runs and I feel so much more confident about the big HALF MARATHON now that I have an 8-miler under my belt!!

{{And I still need to write a description & review of these FlyBarre classes - they're amazing and I'm hoping to continue doing them 1-2x/month!}}

Now that that's out of the way....

I am a fitness fanatic (as if you didn't know!)!  

One of the main reasons that I'm pursuing my personal trainer certification is to teach people how to attain a healthy lifestyle, and then how to maintain it!  I want to help my clients reach their fitness (and lifestyle) goals and I can't wait to spread all of the knowledge that I'm learning!

I believe in individualized goals and plans....what works for one may will not work for another!

Along those lines, I was given the opportunity, as a Sweat Pink Ambassador, to try out and review the Platinum version of The Fitness Games (TFG).  



TFG is a new, free fitness app (you can upgrade for a few dollars) that is going to really take off! It's versatile, very user friendly and incorporates social media/friendly competition to motivate the user to hit their workout and hit it hard!

Overall I was happy with the app.  I'm not 100% sure that I would pay for the upgrade but I would definitely download the free version.

On one of my workouts I used the app to "compete against myself" in a 2 mile run.



Here are my PROS & CONS that I found while using TFG app:

PROS: 
  • Extremely user friendly & makes the workout less "work" and more "fun"!
  • There is a detailed workout for every type of workout (ie: cardio, strength, cross training), and various levels of workouts within those categories (beginner to advanced).
    • There are dozens of different workouts - sure to keep your interest and ensure that you won't get bored!
  • There is a picture/video description of every exercise.
  • Perfect if you're at the gym and need guidance or step-by-step instruction.
  • Cheaper (way cheaper!) than a personal trainer!
  • You can create your own workout if that's more your style.
  • You can compete against yourself, a specific person that you know that also uses the app or a random person that uses the app.
CONS:
  • Your "location", in your phone's settings, has to be turned on for the app to function.
  • It's not totally convenient for someone like me who:
    • (a) likes to create their own workouts. (It took A LOT of time to input a detailed workout in the app)
    • (b) has a high internal motivation to workout hard.
  • The app has to be open & running for it to work; it can't be "minimized" to do other things on your phone (like play music or answer a call).
    • UPDATE: I got an email that TFG is working to resolve this issue. YES!!
ESPECIALLY since the app is FREE I highly recommend downloading it and playing around with it yourself.  It may just be the one thing that your workout routine was missing!! :)
